Synopsis
The sudden appearance of northern lights over Montreal plunges the city into a strange mass insomnia. Camille, an protective young mother, and Philippe, her boyfriend, find themselves at the heart of this unsettling world where sleep deprivation begins to wear down minds. Trapped in a city under a state of emergency, they must fight to distinguish reality from illusion as growing hallucinations and creeping paranoia turn their lives into a waking nightmare.
Our take
Far more than a story about collective insomnia, Saturniids stands as a work haunted by our recent shared experience of lockdown. The series unfolds as a constantly morphing locked-room drama, where physical space twists and fragments alongside the characters’ mental decay. Between creeping paranoia and the dissection of a couple, this radical aesthetic approach immerses us in a sensory vertigo, inviting us as much to question our own relationship with reality as to empathize with a humanity deprived of rest.
