Serie: 5 x 45min
Synopsis
Independent Flanders, near future. A far-right government decrees the expulsion of all foreign-born residents. For Muna and Jamal, arrest means forced separation. Desperate, the couple risks everything by joining ‘The Best Immigrant’, a ruthless reality show where contestants must compete against each other for the ultimate prize: a residence permit.
Our take
Originally conceived as a speculative dystopia, The Best Immigrant finds itself overtaken by the present day, at a time when certain political discourses now openly suggest turning the right to asylum and migrants’ journeys into media entertainment. Chillingly realistic, the series warns us against the normalisation of the inhuman and a reality that remains far too underestimated: the fragility of our institutions in the face of ideological shifts. It serves as an urgent reminder that democracy sometimes hangs by the thread of a single election, and that we, as a collective, are the only ones capable of taking action.
